Barcelona has reportedly been priced out of a permanent deal for Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo.
The 30-year-old, who spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Barcelona, impressed with four goals and five assists in 42 competitive appearances.
Eager to have Cancelo back for Hansi Flick’s first season as head coach, the Catalan giants face a financial hurdle.
Cancelo, under contract with Man City until June 2027, has fallen out of favor with Pep Guardiola, making his exit from the club likely this summer. However, whether he will rejoin Barcelona remains uncertain.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona cannot afford Man City’s €30m (£25.3m) asking price for Joao Cancelo. The defender’s hefty salary adds to the challenge, prompting Barcelona to hope his agent, Jorge Mendes, can broker a compromise.
The report indicates that Barcelona is prepared to trust their current players if a deal for Joao Cancelo falls through.
France international Jules Kounde remains a viable option for the right-back position, while Hansi Flick could also turn to Hector Fort and Julian Araujo.
Barcelona is determined to re-sign Joao Cancelo this summer, although they won’t take any unnecessary risks.
According to the Daily Star, the Blaugrana are preparing a fresh proposal for another season-long loan, offering Man City a £7m loan fee and an obligation to make the move permanent for £18m next summer.
However, Barcelona faces fierce competition for Cancelo’s signature.
Juventus and Inter Milan are reportedly among his potential suitors, while clubs in the Saudi Pro League are also interested and likely to meet Man City’s financial demands without hesitation.
