Fermín, Eric and Cubarsí win gold

The blaugranes earn the top Olympic reward after defeating France in the final, with Fermín scoring a brace

Aspirations achieved in Paris. The three blaugranes in the Spanish squad for the 2024 Olympic Games have reached the highest step on the podium after defeating France in the final. Fermín, López, Eric Garcia and Pau Cubarsí have the gold medal around their necks, after all played key roles for Santi Denia’s team throughout the tournament.

Fermín shines again in the final

Not a great start for Spain as Millot put the hosts ahead after 11 minutes. However, the goal getter for Spain in these Olympics soon turned the situation around.

It only took Fermín seven minutes to score his brace. After 17 minutes he fired in a pass between the lines from Baena to equalise, before the Andalusian appeared again after 24 minutes at the back post to seize on a rebound and score.

Baena then scored the third to make it 1-3 before the break. However, France moved up the gears after the restart and ultimately tied the game with a penalty in added time. Extra time ensued and Camello scored to complete the victory and confirm Olympic gold.

Three blaugrana medal winners

More Olympic medals for the blaugrana cabinet. While it was the first for Pau Cubarsí and Fermín López, Eric Garcia won another and improved on his silver from Tokyo 2020.

That’s now 23 footballers who have won an Olympic medal while playing for FC Barcelona – ten gold, twelve silver and one bronze.
