Who was our Man of the Match at Wembley?

Despite an overall positive performance from Manchester United, we were narrowly defeated by our rivals Manchester City on penalties in the FA Community Shield.

The Wembley clash is the second time the Manchester derby has played out in the national stadium this year, the first, of course, being our famous triumph over the Blues in the FA Cup final at the end of last season.

The result itself won’t be the most cherished memory for United fans, but there were some thoroughly enjoyable displays from the Reds on the day to provide optimism heading into the new campaign.

We asked you, the fans, to vote for your Man of the Match following the final whistle. Keep scrolling to see who topped the poll…

We’re disappointed not to lift the trophy, but it was an encouraging display at Wembley. Who is your Man of the Match?

Perhaps predictably, and certainly deservedly, it was scorer of the game’s opening goal, Alejandro Garnacho, who took the lion’s share of the vote – 41 per cent – for his important contribution to the game.

The Argentina international was introduced just before the hour mark by Erik ten Hag and used what time he had to great effect. Not only did he get his goal, but moments before that smart finish below the grasp of Ederson, he played an inviting ball across the penalty area for Marcus Rashford to run onto. Our no.10 connected with the pass, but crashed the ball against the post with his first-time effort.

But for Bernardo Silva’s late equaliser, the 20-year-old would have once again been celebrating playing a pivotal role in the capturing of silverware for United at Wembley.

Having made an strong impact off the bench, Garnacho followed it up in the penalty shootout, coolly dispatching his spot-kick beyond the City goalkeeper, but the Blues took the final honours on the day.

Honourable mentions must go to Amad and club captain Bruno Fernandes for their efforts, which have duly been recognised by the voting fans.

They claimed 18 and 19 per cent of the vote respectively. The duo were a creative force to be reckoned with throughout the game, with the Ivorian causing City several first-half problems from the right flank and Bruno looking a consistent threat going forward. The Portugal international did have a rocket of an effort in the back of the net before Garna’s scored, but it was called back for offside.

Casemiro also received substantial support in the poll, 10 per cent, looking sharp in the midfield unit, contributing well defensively and kicking off attacks going forward.

Congratulations to Alejandro, and thank you to all those who voted.
