Goalkeeper Ederson scored one penalty and saved another to inspire City to a 7-6 penalty shootout victory over Manchester United in the 2024 Community Shield, after it finished 1-1 in normal time.
Pep Guardiola included Academy graduates Nico O’Reilly, Rico Lewis, Oscar Bobb and James McAtee from the start at Wembley after their impressive displays during our 2024 USA Tour.
McAtee came closest in the first-half after Oscar Bobb capitalised on a defensive error from United and slipped the Englishman through, but his curling effort cannoned off the post.
The Reds had the better of the chances after the interval, with Bruno Fernandes having a long-range effort ruled out for offside and Marcus Rashford clipping the outside of the post.
Then, with just under ten minutes remaining, Alejandro Garnacho stroked Erik Ten Hag’s men ahead from just inside the 18 yard box.
However, Guardiola‘s men struck back superbly in the 89th minute, with substitute Bernardo Silva heading in expertly from Bobb’s brilliant cross from the right flank.
Neither side could find a late winner so the match went straight to penalties, where Ederson saved from Jadon Sancho to keep the shootout at 3-2, before scoring himself to make it 4-4 and send it to sudden death.
Jonny Evans missed for United and Manuel Akanji took the advantage by smashing into the roof of the net to crown us Community Shield winners!
